It is usually their urine. If you have a rodent whose cage smells bad, try putting charcoal pads where they go to the toilet under a layer of sawdust or shredded paper. The charcoal absorbs the smell. Or, you could train your animal to go in a special plastic toilet (you can get one from most pet stores) that you can wash, and some come with some stuff that absorbs the smell as well. Another option is cat litter. These toilets are usually a couple of quid so give it a go and see what works best for your pet.
