I'll assume you mean an automatic. If so, there are friction plates inside the transmission that get worn out and just like old sand paper gets smooth and doesn't do it's job very well, the friction plates get smooth and don't grip anymore, causing the transmission to slip.
In the possible case it is a standard transmission, it isn't the transmission, it's the clutch slipping.
Transmision shift solee transmision cover and noids will cause this. Open tk.ic they dont sthe transmision plate and check the solenoids with a 12v source, make sure they don't stick, also make sure the gasket is not torn or leaking internally. Replace to be sure. Robert
shear
The stress that causes strike-slip faults is produced by a shearing force and so is called shear stress.

If I remeber corectly the shifter shaft in the Transmision rotates, not go in and out.But regardless of that this transmision has a serious internal problem. It could be as easy as the linkage inside the transmision has fallen apart or the whole inside of the Transmision is ruined.BUT FIRST: Check the automatic transmision fluid level!
