The main causes of backfire in any car are incorrect ignition timing, crossed sparkplug wires or worn timing belt (or chains and sprockets).
As with any engine, timing, and also carb problems.
If your engine backfires when trying to start and the valve timing is correct, then it could be electronic ignition unit or the pick up that causes the spark to occur with wrong timing.

It can also be caused by advanced or retarded timing. Advanced timing will cause a backfire through the intake, as the spark occurs too early and ignites the Air/Fuel mixture before the intake valve is closed. Retarded timing causes a backfire through the exhaust as the spark occurs after the exhaust valve has opened. Your problem seems to be advanced timing. A backfire is caused by many different things. The timing of the engine is off or the spark plug wires have been hooked up incorrectly.

You may have lined up the timing marks, but I have had some cars that if you don't have the slack on the correct side of the tensioner pully, when you tighten the belt it causes the camshaft to move about 1 tooth off making it out of time. Check the timing marks again.
