Because so many foods in the United States and other western countries are vitamin enriched, beriberi is extremely rare. In developed countries, beriberi is primarily a complication of malnutrition secondary to Alcoholism or gastrointestinal disorders.

Deficiency of Vitamin B-1 or Thiamine causes beriberi. There are two types of beriberi, dry and wet.
Beriberi is not caused by an organism ! It's a medical condition that results from a deficiency in Thiamin (Vitamin B1).
Beriberi is caused by a deficiency of vitamin B1 also called thiamine. Thiamine is found in cereal, green vegetables, fruit and legumes. Diets which are poor in these foods can result in beriberi. In underdeveloped countries, it is mostly caused by famine. In Asian countries, it can result from "rice diets", where people eat mostly/only white rice. In developed countries, it is most commonly found in chronic alcoholism. It may also occur from malnutrition in the elderly : the "tea and toast diet".
Diseases.
Supplemental Vitamin B1 (thiamine) is given by injection or orally in addition to improving dietary sources. If it is in alcoholic patients, they will need to discontinue consumption of the alcohol as well. Beriberi is caused by a deficiency of thiamine (Vit. B1). It can be a dietary-related deficiency or in some people (alcoholics and alcohol abusers) it is a problem with the body's ability to take in the vitamin from foods and/or store it. Today's diets in the developed nations are mostly supplemented with enough thiamine to prevent it in otherwise healthy people. It is still seen in under developed countries with diets lacking in proper nutrients. It causes heart and nervous system symptoms.
Although beriberi is readily avoided with a healthy diet or successfully treated with thiamine supplementation and the initiation of a healthy diet, this is not always possible in developing countries where resources are scarce.
The nutrient that prevents beriberi
Beriberi (also called lack of vitamin B1), beriberi is a systemic disease which was due to a lack of vitamin B1 in vivo . http://beriberi-disease.blogspot.com/2009/04/beriberi-is-caused-by-vitamin-b1.html
Wet beriberi affects the cardiovascular system. Dry beriberi affects the nervous system.
The develpoed countries are the ones which are more industrialized and hence are the ones which produece more pollution. As it is this pollution that results in acid rains , the developed countries are more responsible for acid rains.
