if its brown its rust or maybe dirt, if its clear, there is more water then coolant, should be about 50/50 water and coolant. strait water is fine in summer if there is no freezing weather, but will rust faster then with a coolant water mix

Some coolants go from blue or green to a cherry red, indicating an air leak to the water jacket; normally an early indication of a blown head gasket.

Coolants that start red, darken or go yellow when there is an air leak. get the dealership or local garage to do a coolant system pressure test. Early diagnosis can stop a heap of financial pain.
