It is believed that the constant irritation from acid reflux is the cause of esophageal cancer. The process (very simplified) goes something like this: The body tries to protect itself from the constant (or at least very frequent) damage from high acid, so it begins to change the cells in the esophagus to be more like the cells in the stomach, which are less sensitive to that damage. These cells are replaced more often. This condition is called "Barrett's esophagus" Any cells which change and reproduce quicky are susceptible to those changes getting out of control, and that is essentially what cancer is: cell growth in altered cells that begin to grow faster than their "healthy, normal" neighbors. They take up space and interfere with the function of the organs or structures that they are in, and often become life threatening.
Its actually called esophageal cancer, and it's its own type. Its cancer of the esophagus, and the main causes are smoking, drinking (a lot), and damage of the esophagus from acid reflux. Some symptoms are weight loss, painful swallowing, and coughing up blood. Hope this helps!
One can't be sure what causes the esophageal cancer.Esophageal cancer occurs when cells in your esophagus develop errors in their DNA. The errors make cells grow and divide out of control. The accumulating abnormal cells form a tumor in the esophagus that can grow to invade nearby structures and spread to other parts of the body.
