Recombination may be caused by loci on different chromosomes that sort independently or by a physical crossing over

between two loci on the same chromosome, with breakage and exchange of strands of homologous chromosomes paired in meiotic prophase I.

Sexual recombination can lead to genetic variation in three ways.

1. The independent orientation of chromosomes in meiosis I. Two different way chromosome can line up in their tetrads leading to.......

2. Crossing over. Chromosome exchange pieces of each other with the chromosome they are lined up with.

3. Random fertilization. These will mixed gametes that come from the above process are randomly " chosen " form zygotes in fertilization.

How do you think crossing over affects the number of different types of gametes that are formed?

You get four choices of gene, of which two are randomly selected. Although sometimes these genes are the same, often they are not all identical. this results in different genotypes and therefore phenotypes being experienced.

Can genetic messages be altered by gene recombination?

Yes.There are two general ways in which toalter the genetic message encoded inDNA. They are:Mutation• results from errors in replication• can involve changes, additions, or deletions tonucleotidesRecombination• causes change in the position of all or part of agene

What environmental factors could affect the genetic code?

Being exposed to environmental radiations and chemicals causes gene mutation. Viruses, transposons and errors that occur during meiosis (DNA replication) also affect the genetic code.

What most directly causes variation in the offspring of sexually reproducing organisms?

Sexual reproduction allows some of the genetic material from the father and mother to mix producing offsprings that are not identical but resemble the parents in certain charateristics. This combination of genetic material from the father and mother results in the variation of offsprings.

How does crossing over create genetic variety in offspring?

The crossing over makes more room for variability. When the chromosomes swap traits, they create different combinations of traits. The different combinations causes more variations in the products.

How does genetic combination help a species to survive?

It causes diversity and variation amongst a population

What event in meiosis leads to genetic variation in organisms?

Genetic crossover occurs, which causes a sharing and transference of genetic information between maternal and paternal copies of chromosomes and further enhances the genetic variability of their offspring.

If a certain species has little genetic variation what could lead to its rapid extinction?

Genetic bottleneck causes very little genetic variation and can cause genetic drift.

What causes genetic variation in a species?

genetic variation happens because of meiosis. chromosomes are randomly in each sperm/egg cell, and so when they come together it's unlikely to get the same combination twice

What are the 3 sources of genetic variation?

Crossing over of sister chromatids in prophase 1 of meiosis, independent assortment along the metaphase plate in metaphase 1 of meiosis. Not sure what a third one is.-------------------------------------------------------------------There are more actually 4 causes that cause genetic variety even though mainstream high school biology only discusses the three main ones: Crossing over, independent assortment (which happen during sexual reproduction), and, random genetic mutations. The 4th one is gene transfer. Species transfer genes between them.

How do mutation and crossing over cause genetic variation?

In meiosis I, segregation of chromosomes...that is, separating off into pairs, allows for crossing over to occur. Crossing over is one mechanism responsible for gene recombination to occur, and genetic recombination is one way that variations in traits increase.

What would happen if crossing over didn't happen during meiosis in humans?

There would be less genetic variation in humans

What are the causes of genetic human disorders?

The causes of genetic disorders areThey can be inherited through Parents;Mutations may occur;A deletion may occur. These are the causes of a genetic disorder.
