The PCV system is not operating properly and allowing crankcase pressure to build up. Replace the PCV valve and with the engine running check to see if air is being sucked into the engine from the opposite valve cover. If not it will need to be cleaned out.
This could also be a symptom of a recognized problem with Windstar 3.8l, that involves the intake ports leaking and carbon / oil buildup via the egr.
Another indicator that this MIGHT be a problem is getting P0171 and P0174 scan codes - they indicate a lean condition Bank 1 and Bank 2.
