It all depends on the intensity that plates grind together with, if they grind with little force you don't get much of a seismic reaction; however if the collide with a great amount of force then there is more energy behind it causing a the powe and speed of a seismic wave to change.

Acceleration is a change in speed or direction. Velocity is the speed and direction. ex. 41 mph northeast
They speed up
A force must be applied to that object according to Newton's First Law of Motion in order to change the speed and its direction.
L waves
change in speed is acceleration. change in speed is the slope of the speed versus time graph, or the derivative of such.

Seismic waves are waves that travel through the Earth or other elastic body2 to 8 kilometersThe primary factor is the composition of the rock that the wave travels through. Secondarily, temperature tends to lower the wave speed and pressure tends to increase the wave speed.
The boundary between the mantle and the outer core is a layer known as D". It is a thermal and chemical boundary where a change in speed of seismic waves has been noted.
The speed of seismic waves are affected by the type of material that the waves are traveling through. in other words (as an example): some type of waves can travel through rocks but not through liquids.
