Probably one of two things. 1) Its running VERY lean, then with the extra load of the AC, things only get worse. Check fuel filters and air-cleaner element. A few seconds on a good 4 gas analyser will confirm the problem instantly. 2) Too much advance in the timing. Easily verified with a timing lite.. Lucky you, OBD1 car. Not a lot of computer stuff.

Go back to basics is what I tell my technicians. The timing is VERY critical and also be sure the vacuum advance is working. Check the carburetor and be sure the choke is pulling off and that the base bolts are tight. Check the inlet fuel filter and then the idle speed and then the air/fuel mixture screws.

The only 350 available in a 1984 El Camino was the diesel. If your V8 isn't a diesel, it's a 305.
