It could be a wheel bearing! Does it sound more pronounced when you make a turn! If it does and it is with a turn to the right, check the left and vice versa. The way to check a wheel bearing is to jack up the car and have the wheel (only one at a time), off the ground. Be sure to use the utmost caution with this proceedure and ensure that the jack will not fail and the wheel is at least two inches off the ground. You then start up the automobile and place the car in drive. Give the car gas with the gas pedal gently and gradually bring it up to a reasonable speed. It would be wise to ensure that the car will not fall, if it does, when both wheels touch the ground, look out. You or anyone else should not stand in front of the car or have their hands anywhere near the wheel when it is turning. Serious injury can happen and eye protection should be used by anyone who is outside watching.....there may be a rock/pebble in the tread of the tire which may become dislodged and be expelled. Point of note: When checking , it would be quite beneficial if there was a second person outside listening at the wheel being checked. Turn off the radio or any other noise source to get a better indication! You also should have enough space in front of the vehicle, should the car fall, so you can stop the vehicle in time. Again, use extreme caution when performing this task! There are other sources of noise which can cause a rumbling in the front of a vehicle such as brakes and rotors. Can you see the rotor, feel on both sides to ensure no grooves are present. If so, the brake pads may be worn out and require replacement of both the pads and maybe even the Rotors if they cannot be turned or grinded down by an authorized service center! Rotors must remain a certain width to maintain it's integrity and function! If they are grinded or turned too narrow, they may warp and fail! Do not touch the rotor of you have just come back from a drive, they may be hot! Water pump's are another cause of noise in the engine compartment! It is a squealing noise. Tires?????? Even a rock stuck in the thread!!! The list goes on and on! Do you have any more indications which may eliminate some causes? Hope this will help you solve your delima!
