When Ludwig van Beethoven was quite young, his mother died and he was forced to take care of his two younger brothers, since his father was an alcoholic. The unfortunate timing of the death of his mother prevented Ludwig from studying with Mozart during his time in Vienna, and he was forced to return.

Then, in his late-twenties, Ludwig began to lose his hearing. Which then caused him to converse less and less, making him into a bit of a hermit. At one point, Ludwig considered suicide, on account of his deafness. There is one well-accounted story of the premier of his Ninth Symphony, where the audience gave a "tumultuous applause". Unfortunately, Beethoven was unable to hear anything, and so he wept.

Beethoven was also confronted with the problem of his position in society. In one case, he met a young countess by the name of Julie Guicciardi, who he loved, but couldn't possibly dream of marrying her due to the class difference.

Ludwig's health also declines noticeably at points during his life when he has romantic problems, as in the one described in the previous paragraph. So it's likely that his health problems were caused by stress.
