Native Americans provided fur pelts to French and Dutch traders. The Europeans gave Native Americans manufactured goods, like cloth, iron cookware, guns and tools. The fur trade in the end, had a negative effect on the Native Americans.

The French made an alliance with the Iroquois, and Dutch made an alliance with the Hurons. Yet, before the Hurons became trading partners with the French, the Iroquois, and Hurons were enemies. The two tribes began fighting and the Iroquois had the advantage with fire arms. The Hurons were devastated.

Worse than war, the diseases brought by the Europeans hurt them, over trapping of anmials weakened the food supply and animals with fur were becomning endangered. Soon, the value of the Native American people began to dwindle, while the value of their lands increased to the colonists, who began pushing the natives off their land.

Europeans took the indian's food, land and exposed them to diseases and even absorbed some into their culture. They were not used to white man's diseases, and had no resistance, consequently many died. Also don't forget that alcohol was introduced to the Indians, and many became alcoholics.
I also imagine the invasion brought about disharmony, even conflict between different Indian tribes. Some being friendly to whites, often out of necessity, and other Indian tribes resenting that.

They introduced the horse, a key animal for the Plains Indians. Manufactured goods also provided new weapons and increased their abilities to hunt and fish.

The introduction of Small Pox into North American devastated the population on the East Coast, creating large voids that the Europeans moved into.

As people began to move west they wanted the Native American lands, so the act made it official that the tribes were to be removed. From the very moment of the first colony the European settlers did their best to kill, remove, or displace the Native tribes from their lands.

The government made treaties they broke and they forcibly removed people to reservations. The Federal army would go into a sleeping village early in the morning and kill men, women, and children. The government policy was a " good Indian was a dead one" and they would do anything to accomplish this task. Read Black Elk Speaks or Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee for further understanding of the genocide that was committed.

Was North America uninhabited when the first Europeans arrived?

No, they were actually inhabited by tribes of Indians! Indians would later teach them how to farm and live in the area. Many theories have came up as to the Indians deaths, however the most likely reason is disease (Europeans were not used to the new land and surroundings and were not immune to what the Indians had, and Indians were not immune to what the Europeans had).
