How does a eutectic fridge work?
"Eutectic" refers to a mixture or alloy that has the lowest possible melting / freezing point. In a true eutectic solution, all its consituents move from solid state to liquid and vice versa simultaniously as in water. The "eutectic point" is thus the freezing / melting point of the whole solution. The term "eutectic fridge" refers to a fridge that has an internal tank filled with a eutectic solution. The fridge works normally with a compressor and coolant gas, the eutectic solution is not circulated through the evaporator. When the fridge is running, it pulls down the temperature of the eutectic tank solution, which then helps keeping the temperature low even when the fridge is not running. A poor man's eutectic would be putting a lot of bottled water in your fridge and then run the fridge until all the water is cold. Now the cold liquid helps keeping down the temperature, while cold air escapes as soon as you open the door. Eutectic fridges are often used in vehicles and boats that must be self-sufficient with their electricity. The "eutectic plate" is chilled while there is plenty of power (=the engine is running, or the sun hits the solar panels etc. ), thus enabling the user to save power at times when no charge is coming to the batteries.
