Earth quakes
It explains why the plates of the earth move on the earths mantle. Each continent moves every year because it sits atop a plate. The continents were once together in a giant landmass called Pangaea. Since then, the continents have broken apart, like puzzle pieces.
Not only does the theory of plate tectonics explain the movement of plates, it explains earthquakes, volcanoes, sea floor spreading and the formation of trenches and mid ocean ridges.
The crust of the earth is constantly being created and destroyed, through subduction (a plate sliding under another plate at an edge and remelting) or seafloor spreading (a crack between plates that is pushing out melted earth and growing larger while spreading).
All the plates are moving around spreading and sliding against each other causing earthquakes and orogenisis (mountain building).
There are lots of great sites about tectonics!
The changes done to the continents and ocean floor can be explained by plate tectonics.
It moves very slowly with out us feeling it which cause the earth to shapevery slowly
As the plates move they, collide, pull apart, or grind past each other producing spectacular changes in Earth's surface.
Ex: Volcanoes, mountain ranges, and deep ocean trenchs

The mantle, being of a silly-putty-like consistancy, is responsible for the movement of the plates on earth's crust, or plate tectonics.
