I have 2 Russian dwarf hamsters. They like to have they're privacy when they're sleeping so they usually like to be in shade, or in a hiding place that is cozy. If you don't already have one, get them a little hut or hiding place to sleep in, some soft bedding, and some cotton fluff would be nice for they're hiding place but always make sure the fluff is safe for DWARF hamsters. If it is not, it will usually say that some where on it. If you're still unsure ask a professional at a pet store.
Provide a place for it to hide temporarily, like a small blanket or towel. Rats are used to coming out from hiding places when they feel safe (in the wild) so a pet rat needs a hiding place until it feels safe enough to come out.
