There's only one characteristic I know of that's most important in this area since I deal with it every day:

TREAT THE PERSON LIKE ANY OTHER NORMAL HUMAN BEING WITHOUT A DISABILITY. DON'T EVER REFER TO THEM AS BEING DISABLED.

You'd be surprised how many people don't do that. Some people don't want to be around someone who's sick or handicapped, and when they do they treat you like a piece of expensive crystal that'll break at every turn. Handicapped people need assistance, not sympathy or any reminders of what they're dealing with. Chances are anyone you deal with has already been dealing with it a long time. If you have any questions, get them out of the way early and leave it at that. You don't want to appear to be completely uninterested in what happened to someone, that's just rude. But don't inject your own opinion about it one way or the other unless it's something you've experienced yourself, because if you haven't "book knowledge" is no knowledge when it comes to those of us who deal with problems 24/7.

Is the handicapped same term with disability?

Colloquially, they are related although you will note that "handicapped" is an adjective and "disability" is a noun. The colloquial meaning is that someone who has a disability (who is unable to do something which people can normally do, like walk, or see, or hear, or think) is called "handicapped". However, the literal meaning of "handicap" is not "disability". A handicap is a penalty placed in certain sports such as horse racing and golf on competitors who are more able than the others, in order to make the competition more fair.
