Abraham Lincoln had to make the choice between sending need supplies to the union fort or let the Confederacy take control of the fort. In the long run Lincoln to notify the southern leaders and send supplies, but the Confederacy still attacked the fort. Thus starting the Civil War.
After the election of 1860, South Carolina was upset by Abraham Lincoln's victory. They were sure that the North would force emancipation on them. Men started joining militia companies and waved flags. South Carolina seceeded December 20, 1860. Major Anderson was part of the US Army. He moved his men from Fort Moultrie to Fort Sumter on December 27 because Moultrie's cannons pointed out to sea and was not defensible. James Buchanan was still president and he sent a paddle wheel steamer, Star of the West, with provisions and 200 reinforcements to Major Anderson. The Confederates refused to let the paddle wheel through. Then six more states joined South Carolina. On February 4, the Confederate States named Jefferson Davis, its new president. Federal forts everywhere were taken by Confederates with two exceptions, Fort Sumter and Fort Pickens in Pensacola, Florida.
Abraham Lincoln came to Washington D.C. on February 23, 1861. He was advised by many to evacuate Fort Sumter. However he decided on April 4 to send ships with supplies and 200 reinforcements. The Confederates asked Major Anderson to surrender. He asked his men and they agreed to stay. The Confederates fired the first shell. The US Army was hopelessly out numbered and did not have supplies to last very long. Anderson agreed to surrender. No one had been killed in the battle until the US army was allowed to ceremonially salute the flag and a cannon fired prematurely and killed the gunner, Pvt. Daniel Hough.
Abraham Lincoln asked for troops to be raised to respond to the Confederacy. This caused Virginia; Arkansas; Tennessee; and North Carolina to join the Confederacy. Abraham Lincoln asked Congress to meet on July 4.
