Chores on the Mormon Trail (and on all pioneer trails in general) were often divided by gender and age:
Men usually drove the teams, did the hunting, scouted ahead on the trail, repaired wagons and equipment, and served as 24-hour lookouts or guards in case of danger.
Boys often looked after the livestock and assisted the men where needed.
Women usually did the cooking, laundry, mending/sewing of clothing and tents, gathering of firewood or "cow pies" and edible plants, and nursing of the sick.
Girls often looked after the younger children and assisted the women, especially with gathering firewood.
Everyone worked together to set up and take down camp each morning and evening.
