What was the central authority in western Europe during the middle ages?

There was only one organization that had broad authority over most of western Europe during the Middle Ages, which was the Church. You should understand, however, that the authority of the Church was always limited by secular authority and internal division, and was very often challenged by the various emperors and kings, so to call it the central authority is not entirely accurate.

In the Middle Ages who were Mormons?

No one. The religion didn't exist until the 1800's when Joseph Smith began the religion in the United States. It may be in Europe today, but that is a recent development. The only religion in Europe in the middle ages was Catholic. All of Europe was Catholic. There were no Mormons in the Middle Ages. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) believe that all mankind was in a state of apostasy (there was no true church upon the earth) for the entire Middle Ages. They believe that the last true Christian died in about 420 a.d. (a man named "Moroni" in the Book of Mormon) and that true Christianity did not return to the earth until Joseph Smith restored it in 1830.

The Catholic church was the only religion in the middle ages and it taught that man was born in sin and to reach heaven he needed to do as the church told him. The church was seen as the "middle man" between man and God. If a person was excommunicated by the church he/she would not be saved and that there would be no salvation for them.

What was the dominant church in the middle ages?

In all of Europe before the eleventh century, the Roman Church was most powerful. In 1056, the Great Schism, which had been coming to a head for hundreds of years, split the Church into the Roman Catholic Church, in the West, and the Eastern Orthodox Church, in the East, and each of these was most powerful in its own sphere.

Was the Catholic Church the only church in Europe during the Middle Ages?

Protestant churches had barely begun during the Middle Ages. The most powerful Church was the orthodox Christian Church. At the Great Schism, it separated into the Roman Catholic Church, which was arguably the larger, and the Eastern Orthodox Church. From a time before the fall of the Roman Empire, there were always also other, smaller church organizations, such as the Coptic Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox Churches.
