Hercules is the Roman name for the Greek divine hero, Heracles. Heracles was born and raised in Thebes by his mortal mother, Alcmene, and his mortal step/foster father, Amphitryon. His biological father was the King of the Gods, Zeus. He was originally named Alcides but was renamed Heracles in an unsuccessful attempt to please Hera, Zeus's goddess wife, who hated the child because he was the result of her husband, Zeus's, affair with Alcmene.
The Romans adopted the Greek version of his myth but changed his name slightly to Hercules.
Hercules really existed, despite the fact that he is known as a mythological figure. He lived in the 13 B.C.He was an unbelievably strong but also very clever man who managed not only to fight successfully against wild animals but also humiliate many arrogant kings and conquer their kingdoms with the help of some loyal friends of him without ever becoming a king himself.Very important historical events that took place in ancient Greece were connected with the life of Hercules, such as conflicts and civil wars between greek tribes.More specifically, these wars took place when the great-grandson of Hercules,Aristomachos,(son of Kleodeos, who was son of Yllos, who was son of Hercules)returned with the dorians (one of the basic greek tribes) in the glorious city of Mykenae to take back the throne that was illegally passed on to a coward and evil cousin of Hercules,Eurystheus, instead of Hercules, who was the rightful owner of the throne. He began his military campaign from the mountain "Lakmos",which is between Thessally,Makedonia and Ipeiros. Some of the dorians decided not to follow this campaign but rather head north. They indeed moved to the north where they became known as "Makedni",which means Makedons. The place got the name Makedonia. So,Makedonia truly is greek. The others headed south. The one third (1/3) of them stopped at central Greece, where they gave to the place the name of their tribe; They called the place"Dorida",which comes from the word "dorian".The great-grandson of Hercules,Aristomachos,(and the dorians) that finally headed south managed to take back the throne of Mykenae.Aristomachos died very soon and after that his children (Timenos,Aristodimos and Kresfontis) spread in three places across Peloponnisos;a)Argos(where Mykenae are located) with Timenos as king, b)Lakonia(where Sparta is located) with Aristodimos as king and c)Messinia, with Kresfontis as king. That is why Leonidas was a descendant from Hercules; He was a descendant from Aristodimos. Some of the sons of Timenos, king of Argos,("Gavanis","Aeropos","Perdikkas") were desinherited from their father Timenos because they tried to murder him,as they didn't want their father to give their sister ("Yrnitho") to Diifontis as his wife. So,Diifontis succeeded his father-in-law to the throne and the three brothers left from Argos. They moved to Makedonia where Perdikkas managed to become a king.Alexander the Great was a decendant from Perdikkas, which is why he continuously used to claim that he was a descendant from Hercules!!!From the rest decendants from Hercules that were in Peloponnisos,a part of them spread across the islands of south Aegean, including Crete and Kos,and to the southeast of Asia Minor. From the island Kos,the grandchildren of Hercules,"Antifos" and "Feidippos", that lived there, moved to "Thessaly" (also a part of Greece) where they gave to the place the name of their father and son of Hercules;"Thessalos".One thing is certain; After all these facts,we know that Hercules DID exist. And he lived just one generatiοn before Achilles, because many heroes of the Trojan War had fathers who were famous Argonauts. For example,Laertes, the father of Odysseus, was an Argonaut. And Hercules had also participated in this heroic journey as an Argonaut. The story of Hercules may be mixed with myth and legend, but this happened only because people at those days actually liked every story to be dressed in myth. And whoever was exceptionally strong or wise was considered as a son of a god.Hercules is a historical figure of 13 B.C.,as the Trojan War took place at 1193 B.C.
I think he ruled nowhere, he was just a god who lived in Mt. Olympus.
Originally Hercules lived in Thebes.

Mt. Olympus Hercules is actually not from Mount Olympus - Heracles is. Hercules is the Roman name for the Greek Heracles. Heracles was born in Thebes, and I do not know where Hercules was born.

Hercules (originally Herakles, in Greek) was the son of a human woman, Alcmene, and the Greek god, Zeus. He was born mortal, but was allowed to live among the gods after he died. There's a great summary of the myth of Hercules called "Hercules, The Mortal Who Became a God" at eZine, which you can access via Related Links, below.
