Checkpoint Charlie was build into the Berlin wall, which began construction on August 15, 1961. The checkpoint's real name was Checkpoint C, but it was called Charlie by the Allied forces because of the NATO alphabet.
Checkpoint Charlie was just one of several checkpoints between West Berlin & East Berlin, until they were all closed by the building of the berlin wall.
Checkpoint Charlie
Checkpoint Charlie was given its name during the Cold War as it was a crosspoint or checkpoint through the Berlin Wall. The name was used by Western Allies.
The Checkpoints were used by Allied military forces to pass from West Germany to East Berlin. There were three: Checkpoint Alpha on the Inter-German Border, Checkpoint Bravo on the western edge of Berlin, and Checkpoint Charlie on the border between East and West Berlin.
Berlin Checkpoint Charlie was in the middle of the street on Friedrichstrasse. It was at the intersection of Friedrichstrasse and Zimmerstrasse. When you crossed Zimmerstrasse you were then in East Berlin. The Kreuzberg District of Berlin in the old American Sector. :)
