Fish are a complex group of animals that are not all simply lumped into once class. There are four basic groups; Bony Fish, Lobe finned fish, Cartelagenous fish and jawless fish, but they are all separate classes, all they have in common is the fact that they are in the phylum Chordata. This strange system stems from the fact that the word fish is a common name for swimming animals that have a certain look to them, but doesnt nessesarily represent any real genetic similarities.
Fish belong to the class Osteichthyes, which includes bony fish. This class is one of the two main groups of fish found in the animal kingdom, with the other being the class Chondrichthyes, which includes cartilaginous fish like sharks and rays.
Fish are far too diverse to fit into a single class: the taxonomic record lists at least 12 different classes, all under the phylum Chordata (vertebrates).
However, the largest taxonomic concentration of fish can be found in the superclass Osteichthyes, which include all bony fish.
Fish are separated by three basic categories. * The lamprey and hagfish belong to the class Agnatha * Sharks and other fish with cartilage skeletons are in the class Chondrichthyes. * Most bony fish are in the class Osteichthyes.
A fish falls into its own category. It is not a mammal because it only lives in the water, it is not a amphibian, and not a reptile because it can only live in the water.......NOT land. If it lived on land, the fish would die:(
Bony fish belong to the Class Sarcopterygii (if lobe-finned) and the Class Actinopterygii (if ray-finned). Coelacanths and lungfish are lobefinned and about all other bony fish are ray-finned. The two classes used to be combined as Class Osteichthyes. There are many superorders and orders in the bony fish classes.
Sharks belong to cartilaginous fish. (Chondrichthyes)
Jawless fish belong to the class Agnatha within the phylum Chordata. They are primitive fish lacking jaws, and include groups like lampreys and hagfish.
Animals that are covered with scales, breathe with gills, and have a tail fin belong to the class Osteichthyes, which includes bony fish.
The dragonfish is in the Animalia kingdom. It belongs to the Phylum Chordata because it has a backbone, and it is in the Class Actinopterygii because it is a bony fish.
A Sturgeon fish is class Actinopterygii or a ray-finned fish. A lobe finned fish is a class Sarcopterygii.
"Flying fish" are a family of fish of Class Actinopterygii, Order Beloniformes, Family Exocoetidae
Chondrichthyes is the Class of fish that has Cartilage Rather than bone.
Sharks belong to cartilaginous fish. (Chondrichthyes)

Starfish are echinoderms of the class Asteridea not fish.
I have just been learning about the phylum 'Chordata' in class. Most fish are in the class called 'Fish'. Pretty simple, and i hope you find this useful!

The Betta splendens is in the Class "Actinopterygii"
not to me A fish is a great class pet. As a preschool teacher, the fish are't distracting like a Guinea Pig. Fish do not make noise very much.
