Members of the royalty and nobility often became knights, but they were not the only ones. In fact, most knights were commoners.

Remember, however that most members of the nobility were commoners. Anyone who was not royal, a peer, or the heir apparent of a peer was a commoner, so the younger son of a duke was a commoner. Since anyone who had a manorial estate, or in the family of such a person, was considered a member of the nobility, there were many commoners who were of the nobility. Knighthood itself was a rank of nobility.

Most knights were the younger sons of nobility, trained over a long period by a knight. But the business of choosing who was to be trained was up to the knight, and no one was technically excluded on the basis of class. There were a number of boys who were accepted to be pages and squires who were sons of merchants or scholars. There was no law I am aware of, aside from custom, that prevented a knight from accepting the son of a serf as a page. In fact, the word knight derives from a Germanic word meaning boy or servant.

Additionally, the creation of a knight was discretionary on the part of a monarch. Knighthood could be conferred on a person who was not trained to be a knight at all. There are many instances recorded of such practice, and there were orders of knighthood made up of people who were chosen entirely on the basis of performance in battle or even on the basis of acts of mercy not connected with military situations.

One order of knighthood in Catalonia, called the Order of the Hatchet, was made up entirely of women who had fought in a battle, regardless of rank. The women had all the privileges of knights.
