Women kept on wearing (in Europe often litterally) the same clothes as they had been wearing up to 1940. Because many of the the men were drafted into their various armies, women started to take over their jobs and then usually wore the same kind of outfits that the men in those jobs had been wearing.
WW II armies also saw the insurgence of large women's auxiliary forces and the need for a sizable support Staff. So the many women in those forces wore military uniforms.
