Pompeii it's self. The entire city was buried in 79AD and it was covered in 65 feet of soot, ash, and rocks. That preserved that day in history. When you visit the city you can still see the remains of the paint pots where the workers were working on a wall, the remains of people, animals, and plants. The accounts of the eruption are few, but they do exist. Added together the evidence is overwhelming .

When Mount Vesuvius erupted in 70 AD, all the ashes fell on the city of Pompeii preserving it. Most of the lower parts of buildings are still standing as well as all the corspes are very well preserved. Though, scientists have replaced the real corpses with plaster copies. Also, the ash covered the windows of the house, preserving everything that was inside. Inside these houses were many clues to how the Romans lived, and who was who.
