Look at North Face or Mountain Hardware's shell and fleece combinations. They provide excellent heat retention without alot of bulk. Plus you can remove layers as the season/environment changes.
The best coat I have ever had was a nice 3/4 length leather coat,with a thermal lining. It stood up to the Chicago winters,and was stylish,and not bulky at all.
