Canada and the United States are both part of the North American Numbering Plan. To place a call within the NANP, just dial 1 plus the area code and the number.

The NANP also includes the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (incl. Saipan and Tinian), plus the following countries and territories in or near the Caribbean Sea: Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Bermuda, Bahamas, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Jamaica, St. Kitts & Nevis, Cayman Islands, Saint Lucia, Montserrat, Turks & Caicos, Trinidad & Tobago, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, British Virgin Islands, and Sint Maarten (Dutch half only of the island of St. Martin).

Despite the fact that calls from one NANP country to another are dialed exactly the same way as domestic long-distance calls, international call charges will still apply.
