In spite of it being during the Second World War when many metal resources were redirected towards the manufacture of armaments and other wartime necessities, Australia issued the usual complement of coins in 1943, and in large quantities.

Australia had its first issue of coins in 1910 and included the Threepence, Sixpence, Shilling and Florin. These were followed the following year with the Halfpenny and the Penny. Australian banknotes were first issued in 1913 and included the Ten Shilling, One Pound, Five Pound and Ten Pound notes. Prior to Australia having its own currency, we used British coins and banknotes on which the Australian currency was based.

I do not believe there is a finite lifespan for Australian coins. They stay in circulation until they are damaged or too worn to be identified easily. There are still many of the first issue of Australian 1966 decimal coins in circulation.
Australia first issued its own banknotes in 1913, three years after the issue of its first coins in 1910. Private banks operating in Australia issued their own banknotes as early as 1817. In 1910, the government assumed responsibilty for these privately issued banknotes and overprinted them. These notes were progressively withdrawn from circulation from 1913 onwards.
The steel 1943 Lincoln cents are common, average coins are 5 to 25 cents.

The first exclusively Australian coins were issued for circulation in 1910. Any coins circulated in Australia prior to 1910 were British coins. Occasionally there were coins from other countries suitably restruck for circulation in Australia.
