Actually, they don't need any. One option is to apprentice to an established director. And, there are two-year and four-year courses offered in cinematography, acting, sound design, and various forms of literary storytelling. All of these courses will help you as a director.
Technically, you do need to go to college at all to become a film director. If you are trying to break into the industry, however, having a four year degree in media arts is impressive to prospective employers.
Do not go to college. The best never did. Some even dropped out of high school.
