Most public school administrators including principals, assistant principals, and district level administrators, need a Master's degree in educational supervision or administration. A number of central office administrators and principals hold a doctoral or other specialized degree in education administration. Because private schools do not fall under the same licensee requirements as State schools, some principals and assistant principals at private schools work with only a bachelor's degree, although most have higher education degrees. Most school principles usually start out as teachers and move up through the ranks. A public school teacher must have a minimum of a bachelors degree and be certified. Still, most go on to pursue a masters degree and/or doctorate.

Principals typically have a least a master's degree, but some also have a doctorate. The master's degree takes between two and three years to complete post bachelor's degree which is a four year program of study. The doctorate takes approximately four years post bachelor's degree. However, the position of principal is usually a position that individuals work up to, with many of them being educators themselves and have served as teachers for a number of years.
