The Carolinas
The southern colony that became a trade center due to Charles Town's harbor is South Carolina. Established in the late 17th century, Charles Town (now Charleston) quickly developed into a bustling port city, facilitating trade in rice, indigo, and later, cotton. Its strategic location made it a vital hub for both regional and transatlantic commerce, contributing significantly to the colony's economic growth.
The ship that brought James Oglethorpe and the first colonists to Charles Town, and subsequently to Savannah in the winter of 1733, was named the Anne. This vessel carried Oglethorpe and approximately 114 settlers, marking the establishment of the Georgia colony. Upon arriving, they made their way from Charles Town to the site of Savannah, which became the first city of the new colony.
The success of the Charles Town colony, established in 1670, was largely insured by the support of the Lords Proprietors of Carolina, a group of eight English nobles granted land by King Charles II. They provided financial backing, governance structure, and resources necessary for the colony's development. Additionally, the strategic location along the Ashley and Cooper Rivers facilitated trade and agriculture, which were crucial for the colony's growth. The influx of settlers and the establishment of trade relations further contributed to its early prosperity.
