It depends on the fluid. Antifreeze is a different color from engine oil.
ATF is red when new, turns brown with age.

Transmission fluid should be a nice burgundy red color. If it is brown or black, this is a sign of transmission trouble. If the fluid smells burnt, the transmission will probably need replaced.

You should never add transmission fluid to a Chevrolet 350 engine. You can add transmission fluid to the transmission through the transmission dipstick holder.
