Assuming by 'plum' you mean purple - mixing red & blue together will give you the colour purple.

Red is a primary color, mixing of any colors will not give you red. Secondary colors are green, orange and purple and are created by mixing 2 primary colors. Purple is made by mixing red and blue. Orange is made by mixing red and yellow, green comes from mixing blue and yellow.
In light mixture yes, white light is a combination of all colors, as can be seen when sunlight passes through a prism. However in paint and ink mixing white is created with pigments, titanium and oxide. Mixing all colors in painting will give you black.

Without seeing the colors it is hard to say for sure. Colors have so many hues. Generally though brown goes well with green, purple, and blue. But, green and blue are hard colors together. But sometimes colors can surprising. I would recommend going to a craft store like Michael's or JoAnn's and buy a color wheel. They only cost a few dollars but give you an easy guide to what colors go well together.
Purple (violet) is a secondary color which can be made by mixing equal parts of red and blue (both primary colours).

Aubergine, is the common usage name for the vegetable known in the united States as eggplant. When used as a name for a colour it is a deep, rich, saturated purple that appears very nearly black.
Brown --------------------------------- Mixing the purple with yellow at a 3:1 ratio will give you a gray which can be lightened by adding white. All palettes are not the same, however, so you have to experiment with the reds, blue, yellows and purples you have to see exactly what colors you get.
