Gray is independent of base coat color. If the stallion is heterozygous for grey there is a 50% chance that the foal will be gray. If the stallion is homozygous for grey the foal will be gray. If the stallion has only one gray parent then he is heterozygous.
That being said, the base coat color of a gray/color of a non-gray foal can be partially
extrapolated from the parents/grandparents/great grandparents.

∙ 13y agoThere are different kinds of 'red'. If the stallion is a chestnut that is different that a 'red roan' or a 'red dun'. But lets assume the stallion is a chestnut and the mare is a grey. Grey and chestnut are both a dominant color gene. If there are greys and chestnuts close up, top and bottom it would be a coin toss as to which color the foal will be. And remember when you are talking genetics, nothing is %100. There are reccesive colors that can pop up at any time.
Point of interest:If the foal is grey keep in mind that he/she won't be grey at birth. Greys are other colors when born and fade as they get older. They will usually have rings around their eyes and may have a few white hairs mixed in the rest of the coat color.

The stallion's genetic makeup at the agouti site will determine what the color of the foal if the foal inherits E from the dam (since the mare is recessive at the agouti site).. The statement that the stallion throws back to the dam's color may be an indicator that he is recessive at the agouti site (making him aaee) If this is the case this particular breeding would produce a black foal (which would make the throws back to the dam's color "true"). Bred to bay, brown mares the foals would also "tend" to produce foals colored like the dams especially if they don't carry e at the extension site.

NO NO NO!! As soon as your mare is bred, she should not be in by the stallion. If your mare and foal are in with the stallion, the stallion (no matter how sweet it is) will kill the foal.
