A male goldfish is usually all white except for a thick red outlining at the top of the goldfish. Birthmarks are more common to happen to males. The most common birthmarks are several specks of red in the middle of the white on the goldfish.
The goldfish's original color has always been gold. Their ancestors- the carp had rather dull markings so when the ancient Chinese (who kept pools of pet carp at the time) saw a carp that was bright/gold in color, they separated it from the rest and started breeding the "gold" fish together to eventually form the goldfish we know today.
