In the original 1900 book edition of The Wizard of Oz, the Slippers are Silver. In the beloved 1939 film version, they're Ruby. The color was changed for the film, because those involved in the production felt that the silver gave a washed out effect to Dorothy Gale's appearance. The result was a patriotic look to Dorothy, whose dress was blue and white.
