- Class A CDL: Combination vehicles weighing over 26,000 lbs GVW, provided that the vehicle in tow is rated at over 10,000 lbs. Examples include tractor trailers, dump trucks with tag trailers rated over 10,000 lbs., heavy commercial wreckers, California trucks, etc.
- Class B CDL: Single vehicles weighing over 26,000 lbs GVW, and not towing a vehicle of more than 10,000 lbs. Examples include dump trucks, expedited vans, mobile cranes, garbage trucks, some street sweepers, etc.
- Class C CDL: Any vehicle under 26,000 lbs. GVWR which is either designed to carry more than 15 persons (including the driver), or is carrying a sufficient quantity of hazardous materials to require the display of placards.
Some vehicles are exempted from requiring a CDL under the federal statute, although states may individually still require them. Tactical military vehicles are exempted from requiring a CDL (only vehicles in active service - demilitarised vehicles sold on the commercial market are not), fire trucks are exempted (although most states and departments require their drivers to have a CDL), as are recreational vehicles.
Additionally, air brakes on a CDL isn't actually an endorsement. You must take the written portion of the air brakes test and test on a vehicle equipped with air brakes. If you fail the air brakes portion, you can still get a CDL, but it will have a restriction - "L" - which prohibits you from driving a commercial vehicle with air brakes.
