Peter van Pels (van Daan) was ordered (according to Otto Frank) to march from Auschwitz (Poland) to Mauthausen (Austria) Otto tried to persuade him to hide in the Auschwitz sick barracks but Peter decided to go on the death march. After marching the full journey he arrived and died of exhaustion in the Mauthausen sick barracks on 5 May 1945 (according to the Red Cross), just 3 days before liberation.
