A Mexican cavalry unit crossed the Rio Grande and ambushed an American patrol, killing or wounding 16 American soldiers. Two days later, Congress declared war, and the War with Mexico began. Not everyone favored war. Some people felt that the conflict was unjust and did not see the need to declare war.

The Thornton Affair, which was a skirmish between Mexican and American troops in the Nueces Strip, which resulted in American blood shed.

It however, was a no man's land because Mexico believed the Nueces River was the actual border between Mexico and the United States, while Americans believed the Rio Grande was such border.
