theorically driving with the windows down will use more gas due to the disturbance to the car s aerodynamics
Usually driving with the ac on will use more gas, but its a very small difference and i'd say just use whichever is more comfortable to you. Tests in the UK have prooved that in all cases It is more economical to use the A/C
On the side of air conditioning causing the car to use an unnecessary amount of fuel, this fact is true. Sort of. The truth is using the car's air conditioning does burn more gas, especially when driving in town. In this driving situation fuel consumption goes up by roughly 10%. A good rule of thumb to follow is when the car is moving at a rate of 40 mph or slower, driving with the windows down is definitely the better option for fuel efficiency. That means that for trips to the grocery store, post offices, and visiting ma and pa, drive with the windows down. On the other side of the debate, we have the air conditioning saves on gas due to eliminating air drag on the car from the open windows. Once again, this theory is correct as well, in certain conditions. When driving on the highway or at speeds greater than 45 mph, open windows increase air drag on the car to a point where fuel efficiency is lost by up to 10%. In cases where the vehicle is running at speeds closer to 55 mph, gas inefficiency reaches the 20% mark. Very simply put, both sides of the debate are correct depending on the kind of driving in question. When town driving, leave the windows open, when highway or higher speeds driving, the AC is definitely the way to go. When only the back windows are down, they make a thumping sound because of the air tightness of the car's cabin. Roll down a front window slightly and this will go away.
it depends on the outside temperature and if the air conditioning is running. Most dogs would say "not long".
ANSWERThat absolutely may be the case.
Air Conditioning is a unit connected to the engine... when ac on, it connects to power from the engine to make it operate... it uses power making the engine work harder, consuming more gas. I've heard from research that driving less that 50mph(or 40 i think) with windows down is more fuel efficient.. while driving 40 or 50mph + and having the ac on is more fuel efficient.. because of drag from wind.
Because of the "drag" caused with windows down, it is usually more beneficial to drive with the windows up and the air on. For more information, check out HowSTuffWorks.com.
the ones with no a/c and the windows won't go down
Driving with the windows down and AC off at lower speeds is more fuel efficient. At higher speeds(45+), having the windows down will create more drag and it is more efficient to have the windows up with the AC on.
no myth-busters did a review on it and you use more fuel with windows down then you do using the AC. AC uses the same amount of gas as running with the windows up and ac off At speeds below about 30mph it is better on fuel mileage to drive with the windows down. Above 30, the drag from the open windows makews it more economical to run the ac and roll up the windows.
but what if the ac gets frozenSure ... once the thermostat senses the cooler air, it will shut down the AC unit anyway.
More than its worth, roll your windows down or buy a different car that has a/c.
