The United Kingdom is placed on the western edge of the European Continent, although many people from the UK differenciate Europe as a separate entity due to the British Isles being separated from mainland Europe.

Part of the confusion also stems from the fact that the British Isles are made up of The Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom ( as a sovereign state), The UK in itself contains 2 countries (England and Scotland), 1 Principality (Wales) and 1 Province (Northern Ireland) - all of which can often cause confusion as to the UK's status both as a sovereign state and as to its continental status/position.

Although not every country or 'constituent country' within the British Isles is officially sovereign, the British Isles consist of more 'nations' as such than North America, some people argue that if all of the 'nations' within the British Isles were sovereign, then it could well be seen as having continental status.
