The Nullification crisis can be defined as a sectional crisis that occurred during the presidency of Andrew Jackson which created the 1832 South Carolina Ordinance of Nullification. This ordinance stated that the federal tariffs of 1828 and 1832 where unconstitutional and therefore null and void.
Jackson supported states' rights but viewed nullification as a prelude to secession, and he vehemently opposed any measure that could potentially break up the Union. In July 1832, in an effort to compromise, he signed a new tariff bill that lowered most import duties to their 1816 levels.
The final resignation was over the issue of the right of states to nullify federal tariff laws and the right of the federal government to send in troops in order to collect these tariffs. Calhoun also wanted to be a Senator which he became after he left the vice presidency. Before this, Calhoun , who was a holdover from the previous administration and distrusted Jackson, sided against Jackson in the Peggy Eaton flap.
