Well, we don't really know but we do know that he was the first to discover this new land. But then he didn't really tell anyone so they didn't really know. The only people who really did know was the king and queen of Spain. But then Amerigo Vespuchi came and "discovered" America. After that everyone knew. This is also why America is called America....because of Amerigo Vespuchi. Otherwise, if Columbus named it, it would have been called Christopher, Columbia, Columus, or whatever.
