John Wilkes Booth was a Southern sympathizer along with several of his friends. When the US Civil War was still undecided, Booth planned to kidnap US President Lincoln and bring him to the South. He hoped he could as captive, and allow the Confederacy to negotiate a deal for Southern independence. Once the war was over, he sought revenge by assassinating Lincoln.
