Despite common rumor, not much. If he had gone slower, yes they would have noticed it from farther away, but it would have been harder to turn it away from the iceberg! And no, he was not going the fastest Titanic was expected to go. Titanic was never run at its highest speed, it never got the chance. They were expecting to hit top speed the next day.
And ramming into it head first would have saved it from sinking (probably), but it would have killed everyone working in the front of the ship.
The Commanding Officer of the Titanic was one Captain Edward Smith. Captain Lord was skipper of another ship which may or may not have been involved in a rescue effort. Then again Walter Lord was the author of the book ( A night to Remember,) about the Titanic disaster. I seem to recall Captain Lord commanded the S.S. Californian. It seems members of his crew saw distress flares fired by the Titanic- but assumed it was some kind of celebration- after all it was the Maiden Voyage of the ship- Maybe the radio operator did not attempt to make radio contact.. thick books are written on all aspects of this Titanic tragedy at sea!
There is a statue of Captain Smith in Lichfield, England done by Kathleen Scott, the widow of Robert Scott who died near the South Pole around March 30th, 1912, two weeks before Smith.
