First of all, I am NOT a doctor. Secondly, going by my personal experience of 55 years, there are a few possibilities. It could be a: 1) Cyst (ganglion or otherwise) 2) Carbuncle (another type of growth) 3) Fatty deposit I must stress the importance of seeing a qualified MD to properly diagnose this condisiton. A good dermatologist would be a perfect choice. Lastly, do NOT pick at or try to lance (cut) this growth as it could have a good supply of blood vessels around it and you could cause serious bleeding. Good luck and get to that doctor!!!!

It could be an insect bite, an alergic reaction or an infection. Try a little over the counter antihistimine, such as benedryl. If it doesn't go away quickly you might want to have a doctor look at it.
A small bump or knot behind the ear can be an injury, cyst, or a swollen lymph gland. If you hit this area in an accident, then it may cause a bump to appear that is painful. It could also be a benign cyst that may require removal. Swollen lymph glands behind the ear can be due to bacterial infections.
