In the 70's and 80's, you were lucky if you could sustain fusion for a few microseconds. Now, on average it's controlled for 3/10's of a second, so progress has been made. It may become a reality in this century, if more research is put into it. It uses two common gases to work, nothing fancy. Cold fusion is fusion that is generated at much lower temperatures, but has shown negative results, and it takes more energy to make and sustain that it puts out.
