Could be the starter or ignition switch...does the car crank/turn over when you turn the key? If you just turn the key and it 'clicks' it might be the ignition switch. I've had this problem before, and it ended up being the alternator. HOpe this helps!
start with checking the battery, next check the solenoid, next check the starter motor.then check ignition switch
most likely the solenoid on the starter or could be a key switch problem doesn't sound like a battery problem
THE netural Saftey Switch could B bad .
It could be poor battery connections, the starter,
If your 1997 Passat dies sometimes, you might have an issue with the alternator not charging the battery. You could also have a problem with the distributor or the coil.
If your car doesnt start, it could be the battery. But if the car starts and you unplug the negative cable and the car turns off, its the alternator.
could be a weak battery, not turning engine fast enough at startup. check battery voltage should be approx. 12.5 volts when not running.about 14.0 when running.
I would first have the battery checked. It sounds like a weak battery. It could also be the computer. In fact, there are a number of possibilities but the first thing I would check would be the battery.
If engaging the overdrive and then after a few seconds it starts to flick on the dash board the likely problem will be that the overdrive is no longer working properly. Also, this could indicate a battery being dead.
i would suspect you have a weak battery, dirty terminals. there could be other possibilities but really suspect battery problem.
Its probably just out of battery and it also takes ages to load up sometimes.
Best guess would be that you have a short to ground somewhere that is draining your battery.
