Guessing a "Standard" transmission (not an automatic).
Normally this is caused by broken synchronize rings; gears inside a standard transmission are "Paired" except for reverse. So a broken synchronizer on 1&2 but not 3&4 (5&6) is highly likely. (Synchronizer is used here in its broad sense of Sync rings, retainers, clips, and keyways; assuming a typical BW setup).
I dont think a 95 Transmission will fit in the 98. From what i've been seeing, in my 98' Tahoe, the starter is mounted on the bellhousing of the transmission. I dont think that the 95 would have the same set up when 96-7 wouldnt also. As far as I know, you have to have a transmission that is 98 or newer. Could I be wrong though?
could be freeze plug, or intake leaking

The seal that was installed next to the pump was ripped, whish is easy to do. Either there is nothing at all, or there will be all the same gears.
